Abbie left school and decided she wanted to work in a caring position. She applied for the apprentice role just over a year ago and is now halfway through her two-year apprenticeship. She wants to let others know that you don’t necessarily need qualifications to apply as you can gain the skills on the job, as long as you have the right values and qualities, anyone can be successful in a career in social care.

“I’ve only completed my final year and I have already learned so much. in particular, I have learned about caring for residents living with dementia and how to look after them and help them. I have been on several training courses and working towards by SVQ2.

“A lot of people don’t realise all that is involved – but it’s so rewarding, I really love it. There are so many routes and areas of care. Working in a care home may not be for everyone but there are lots of different paths you can take. For me, I hope to go into nursing studies at some stage, but first I want to finish my apprenticeship.

Abbie’s advice to people looking to apply for an adult social care position:

“I would recommend an adult caring role to anyone. It is such a rewarding job and everyone in my team is so friendly and helpful. The team of care professionals that I work with are so supportive and I get so much assistance from them. I love the fact that I can go home each day and know I’ve helped someone.”
