Gillian Loudon formerly worked in a day centre and had also spent time during university as a personal carer. She is now encouraging others to find their calling with a role in adult social care.
“I saw the opportunity to get more involved in the care sector as I was attracted to the personal nature of care and the ability to make a difference in other people’s lives. After I had my first placement, I felt as though I had made the right decision.
“The thing I love most about adult social care is that every single day is different. By dealing with so many different people, you learn through them. My role as a Development Manager means that I get to develop services and support staff with any of their needs which is something I find very enjoyable and rewarding.
“Being able to make people’s lives that bit happier and enjoyable through care work gives you a real sense of fulfilment. You make it possible for people to carry on with their lives and being able to see the change in them and other teammates is really special. It’s so satisfying to see how our carers develop as people through their work.”
Gillian’s advice to people looking to apply for an adult social care position:
“If you want to care for others, you can do it in a place where you are supported and valued. For anyone interested in care work, I’d say go out there and speak to your local care service and get some advice. There are so many different roles that you can get involved in and you never know what you might end up being suited to.”
